Indonesian divers retrieve AirAsia flight data recorder

An Airbus investigator walks near part of the tail of AirAsia flight QZ850 in Kumai Port, near Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan January 12, 2015. – Reuters pic, January 12, 2015.A team of Indonesian navy divers on Monday retrieved one of the two black boxes from an AirAsia airliner that crashed two weeks ago, killing all 162 people on board, a government official said.
Flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control in bad weather on December 28, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from Indonesia's second-biggest city of Surabaya to Singapore."At 7.11, we succeeded in lifting the part of the black box known as the flight data recorder," Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo, the head of the National Search and Rescue Agency, told reporters at a news conference."We are still trying to find the cockpit voice recorder."Officials hope the black box, which was found under the wrecked wing of the plane, will reveal the cause of the crash. The national weather bureau has said seasonal storms were likely a factor.Investigators have said the recorder would most likely be taken to the capital, Jakarta, for analysis and that it could take up to two weeks to download the data. However, the information could be accessed in as little as two days if the devices are not badly damaged.Soelistyo did not provide any details of the condition of the flight data recorder.Over the weekend, three vessels detected "pings" that were believed to be from the black boxes' emergency locator transmitter. But strong winds, powerful currents and high waves hampered search efforts.Indonesian navy divers took advantage of calmer weather in the Java Sea on Monday to retrieve the flight recorder and search for the fuselage of the Airbus A320-200.Forty-eight bodies have been retrieved from the Java Sea and searchers believe more will be found in the plane's fuselage.Relatives of the victims have urged authorities to make finding the remains of their loved ones the priority."All the ships, including the ships from our friends, will be deployed with the main task of searching for bodies that are still or suspected to still be trapped underwater," Soelistyo said, referring the multinational force helping with the search and recovery effort.Indonesia AirAsia, 49% owned by the Malaysia-based AirAsia budget group, has come under pressure from authorities in Jakarta since the crash. The transport ministry has suspended the carrier's Surabaya-Singapore licence for flying on a Sunday, for which it did not have permission. However, the ministry has said this had no bearing on the crash of flight QZ8501.President Joko Widodo said the crash exposed widespread problems in the management of air travel in Indonesia.Separately on Sunday, a DHC-6 Twin Otter operated by Indonesia's Trigana Air crashed on landing at Enarotali Airport in Paniai, Papua.Strong winds caused the aircraft to roll over, domestic news website Detik.com reported, with no injuries to the three crew members on board. The plane was not carrying any passengers. – Reuters, January 12, 2015.

Minister called for emergency meeting over pump prices, says Rafizi

PKR lawmaker Rafizi Ramli says the managed float system for RON95 and diesel was discussed at a recent government meeting. – January 12, 2015.Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Hasan Malek has held an emergency meeting with oil firms and Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) last Friday following pressure over Putrajaya's fuel price management system, PKR lawmaker Rafizi Ramli said today.According to the agenda of the meeting, Rafizi said the minister discussed the managed float system for RON95 and diesel, the losses PDAM allegedly incurred from the plunge in petrol and diesel retail prices, preparedness to meet increased demands for RON97, and preparation on the possibility of a more frequent retail price announcements."After my statements criticising the fuel price setting system currently carried out, the minister called for an emergency meeting last Friday, a day after I urged that a system based on consignment stock be implemented and that fuel prices be reduced each week," said Rafizi in a statement today."I urge the minister to immediately reveal to the public the outcome of the emergency meeting. Has Barisan Nasional finally agreed to reduce prices each week so that the people can enjoy lower petrol and diesel prices?"Rafizi, who is PKR secretary-general and vice-president, also said that the price of RON95 had fallen to RM1.62 per litre on January 9, based on the formula the Barisan Nasional government used to determine fuel prices."This trend will continue and it is not impossible that by the end of January 2015, the price of RON95 (according to the formula set by Barisan Nasional itself) will fall to RM1.50 per litre," said the Pandan MP."Unfortunately, because the price is only set once a month, Malaysians will continue to pay RM1.91 per litre even though the price is much lower."Rafizi said that the extra 30 to 40 sen the rakyat paid for each litre of fuel became Barisan Nasional's "hidden taxes"."I urge the Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism to discuss these issues in the Cabinet meeting this week and to announce a decision as soon as possible to prevent the rakyat from becoming victims."A day before the alleged meeting, Rafizi had issued a statement urging Barisan Nasional to revise the fuel price on a weekly basis, claiming that it had collected an estimated RM633 million in hidden petrol and diesel tax.In a press conference on Wednesday, he had said petrol station operators were at risk of closing down under the automatic price mechanism Putrajaya used to fix the retail price of petrol and diesel. – January 12, 2015.

Aksi gadis peluk artis K-pop undang cemuhan

Aksi gadis peluk artis K-pop undang cemuhan

“Banyak dikatakan tentang K-pop.

K-pop cuma cari makan
Taengzbl: Semua benda perlu dikawal kerana semua mempunyai limit.
#MenentangKejahatanKpop
Opiedidie: Kau sudahlah pakai tudung lagi nak peluk bukan muhrim, agak-agaklah, jagalah sikit maruah perempuan bertudung. #MenentangKejahatanKpop

Sri Lankan popular strongman Mahinda Rajapakse lost the presidency despite intimidating his opponents and the press. – Reuters pic, January 11, 2015.Sri Lankan popular strongman Mahinda Rajapakse surprisingly lost the country's presidential elections two days ago while pursuing a third term in office – much to the joy of the South Asian island nation. He lost with 47.6% of the vote, while his opponent, former health minister and ally Maithripala Sirisena took 51.3% of the vote.If those numbers are familiar, it is because those are nearly the same numbers as the split between the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) and opposition pact Pakatan Rakyat (PR) in the 2013 general election in Malaysia.More importantly, the fall of Rajapakse in Sri Lanka offers a lesson for Malaysia: that the very powerful and those who intimidate their opponents and the press, apart from advocating censorship – ultimately lose.Rajapakse was Sri Lanka's hero who ended the 26-year civil war with the minority Tamil population in 2009 and after two terms in office with three brothers also holding key posts in the government – decided to change the law allowing unlimited terms as president.Using the economy as a key driver in the Indian Ocean island, his government imposed censorship and hounded both opposition politicians and journalists to prevent dissent to his rule.Rajapakse, who first came to power in 2005, was last elected in 2010 when he defeated his former army chief Sarath Fonseka, who was later jailed on charges of implicating the government in war crimes.According to the BBC, his critics said he became increasingly authoritarian and failed to tackle the legacy of Sri Lanka's civil war, which left the Tamil areas in the north impoverished and embittered. While the circumstance with Malaysia is different, his brand of politics is all too similar to Malaysians. The licensed mass media in Malaysia paint a picture of a popular government but in cyberspace, dissent and criticism hog online media and social media sites that has now led Putrajaya to bring back a retired civil servant to head its communications regulatory agency. In public universities, academics and students are routinely reminded not to get involved in political activities while the colonial-era Sedition Act is now the preferred law to silence dissent. This from a government that has lost further ground in the 2013 elections from the 2008 elections where PR first denied BN its traditional two-thirds parliamentary super-majority.The BN government had also used the economy as a bait, planning economic and government transformation programmes together with direct cash aid but only gained 47% of the popular vote in 2013.Perhaps BN can learn from what contributed to Rajapakse's defeat and if it does not, it might just share the former Sri Lankan president's fate in the next general election. – January 11, 2015.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak visiting flood victims in Tumpat, Kelantan, recently. – Twitterpic, January 11, 2015.Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said he was also a victim of the floods after he was infected with the E. Coli (Escherichia coli) bacteria while visiting flood-affected states in the country.Sharing his experience, he said being ill and confined to bed for days due to the infection was not something he would want to go through again, Mingguan Malaysia reported today.“I was supposed to come to Pekan earlier but I am also a victim of the floods. Even though I am not qualified for aid, but I can still be considered a victim because I was infected by E. coli recently.“It isn't an experience I would like to go through again. If you don’t believe me, ask my wife (Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor)," he was quoted as saying. It was believed that Najib was infected last Monday due to suspected food poisoning after his visits to flood-hit victims. He recovered fully from the infection last week.Najib said exposing himself to the risk of the infection was part of the job, since he had to inspect the flood situation and check on how the people were faring."Not only did I greet the flood victims. I also consumed whatever they ate and drank."What happened to me has reminded me how important it is to always take care of health and cleanliness when dealing with flood disasters. Anyone can catch E. Coli," he said.E.coli is a bacterium widely found in the human intestine. Certain strains can cause mild to severe food poisoning symptoms. Infection can happen if one consumes water or food contaminated by human or animal faeces. – January 11, 2015.

Indonesian divers launch efforts to retrieve AirAsia black boxes

People watch as a section of the tail of AirAsia QZ8501 is lifted off a ship and onto the back of a truck, the day after it was lifted from the seabed, in Kumai Port, near Pangkalan Bun, central Kalimantan January 11, 2015. – Reuters pic, January 12, 2015.Indonesian navy divers took advantage of calm weather in the Java Sea on Monday as they attempted to retrieve the black box flight recorders of an AirAsia airliner that crashed two weeks ago, killing all 162 people on board.
Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control in bad weather on December 28, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.Search teams at the weekend believed they had found the aircraft's fuselage and that the two black boxes were likely nearby. However, strong winds, currents and high waves on Sunday hampered efforts to reach the suspected wreckage.Weather officials said conditions were favourable for search efforts on Monday morning but could turn poor in the afternoon, giving divers just a few hours to work."(The divers) began diving very early in the morning to take advantage of the weather," Supriyadi, operations coordinator for the National Search and Rescue Agency, told Reuters in the town of Pangkalan Bun, the base for the search effort on Borneo.Forty-eight bodies have been retrieved from the Java Sea and searchers believe more will be found in the plane's fuselage.Three vessels involved in the search have detected pings, believed to be from the black boxes, about 4km from where the plane's tail was raised on Saturday, in water about 30 metres deep.Tonny Budiono, a navigation director for the transport ministry, said on Sunday divers had found the location of the black box and planned to gradually shift layers of the aircraft debris to retrieve it on Monday. If that failed, teams would lift the debris using large balloons, the same technique used to lift the tail section.Once the recorders are retrieved and taken to the capital, Jakarta, for analysis, it could take up to two weeks to download data, investigators said. However, the information could be accessed in as little as two days if the devices are not badly damaged. The cause of the crash is not known but the national weather bureau has said seasonal storms were likely to be a factor.Indonesia AirAsia, 49% owned by the Malaysia-based AirAsia budget group, has come under pressure from authorities in Jakarta since the crash.President Joko Widodo said the crash exposed widespread problems in the management of air transportation in Indonesia. The transport ministry has suspended the carrier's Surabaya-Singapore licence for flying on a Sunday, for which it did not have permission. Were police right or wrong about gambling kingpin, asks DAP

The Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar should state whether police were right or wrong in linking alleged gambling kingpin Paul Phua to the 14K triad because the credibility of the police force is at stake, says Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 11, 2015.The nation's top cop should state whether police were right or wrong in linking alleged gambling kingpin Paul Phua Wei Seng to the 14K triad, an opposition lawmaker said.Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo said it was not enough for Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to ask the public to interpret for themselves."Khalid should brave himself up and openly state whether Umno lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah is right in saying that the police was wrong to link Paul Phua to the 14K triad."It is not enough for him to ask people to interpret his statements. That will only make things worse," Gobind said in a statement today."The credibility of the police force is at stake not only in Malaysia but internationally. There is no point dropping hints."Gobind said Shafee had no business speaking for the police force or the government."Shafee may speak on behalf of his client, but it must be Khalid who speaks up for the police force."Khalid had previously told news portal Malaysiakini that he would not comment on Phua's case as it would jeopardise the court proceedings in the United States."With all due respect, that is ludicrous. All we are asking him to do is to state the position of the police insofar as Phua and the 14K triad are concerned."Gobind said this did not affect the case in the United States.Furthermore, he said, since Shafee has publicly commented on the issue, speaking on Phua's behalf and accusing the police of making "a very big mistake", Khalid cannot just remain silent."He must respond. Did the police make a big mistake or not?"If the police did, then own up to it. If they did not, Khalid should defend his force."He must strike back and tell both Shafee and Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that they are wrong," Gobind said.Phua was arrested in Las Vegas in June during the FIFA World Cup 2014 for illegal betting. The issue made the headlines when the South China Morning Post reported that Zahid had written a letter to the FBI vouching for Phua.Zahid's letter contradicted intelligence work on Phua, whom police have found to be involved in triad activities.Phua is now facing illegal sports betting charges in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the letter, Zahid had not only cleared Phua, but said he had helped the government in national security projects.Zahid has been condemned by many quarters for acting unilaterally and for abusing his office. The issue became serious enough for Putrajaya to order Phua's lawyers to retract Zahid's letter from the Nevada District Court where it was tendered as part of Phua's defence. The allegation that Phua was a member of the Hong Kong 14K triad was based on an FBI internal document previously submitted to the court, according to the police.Malaysian police are reported to have informed the FBI’s representative in Kuala Lumpur of Phua's ties with the criminal organisation.“The RMP has identified the 14K triad as a local, organised crime syndicate involved in illegal drugs, illegal gambling and money laundering activities in Malaysia," stated the internal FBI document, dated July 17, 2008.However, Zahid refuted these allegations in his letter when he said Phua was neither a member of the triad, nor was he associated with it in Malaysia, and that the triad did not exist in Malaysia.Indirectly, Khalid had appeared to be defending police findings concerning Phua. While he said that the 14K triad did not exist in Malaysia, he told news portal Malaysiakini that "there are Malaysians abroad who are known to be members of the triad.""How people wish to interpret this statement (above) is up to them," Khalid had said, according to Malaysiakini. – January 11, 2015.
