Syed Ali pertahan 'pelukan Rosmah'

Syed Ali pertahan 'pelukan Rosmah'

Seorang pemimpin bahagian Umno tampil mempertahankan tindakan isteri perdana menteri Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor memeluk pemain badminton Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

'MCA kempen pelajar sekolah pakai baju kurung'

Human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen arrested in sedition probe

Major Zaidi Ahmad, seen with his children, has been dishonourably dismissed from the armed forces. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Najjua Zulkefli, January 12, 2015. Whistle-blower Major Zaidi Ahmad has been dismissed from the armed forces after being found guilty today on two charges of breaking protocol in revealing problems with the indelible ink used in the May 2013 general election. Before delivering the sentence, military court presiding officer Col Saadon Hasnan said the sentence was not because of the ‎issues Major Zaidi had raised regarding the indelible ink, which was found to have washed off after application."It is because of the two offences that he committed by going against the two standing orders issued by the Air Force's higher authority," said Saadon.Earlier today, the court ruled that prosecutors had established a prima facie case against Major Zaidi in two out of the seven charges made against him.The panel led by presiding officer Col Saadon Hasnan today said eight witnesses had been called to the stand since the trial began in May 2013.“The prosecutors have created a prima facie case against the accused for the second and the third charges and therefore we have found him guilty of these charges," Col Saadon said.He earlier announced that Major Zaidi will be representing himself in court as the defence counsel "could not attend the proceeding".“The defence counsel could not attend the court but the court will still resume," he said before proceeding to announce the court decision on Major Zaidi’s case.Major Zaidi was found guilty of breaching two standing orders, that is, speaking to the media without the consent of the Defence Ministry and also for sharing confidential information on his transfer order with the media without the consent of the Armed Forces Council under Section 51 of Armed Forces Act 1972.Last December 15, the military court hearing the case of Major Zaidi in the indelible ink issue, dismissed a request for a postponement of the case pending a judicial review application, saying the case had dragged on "for so long".The panel led by Col Saadon said the authorities had instructed them not to delay the case any longer as much time and money had already been spent."This case has been going on for so long. We cannot postpone it any longer. Proceedings here will continue despite the application to the Kuala Lumpur High Court for judicial review," he said.Defence counsel Nasar Khan Mirbas Khan then informed the panel that Major Zaidi and his defence team will not participate any further in the court martial proceedings as they have chosen to remain silent. The authorities had previously decided to retain the same panel after hearing an application from the defence to dissolve the bench. The defence complained that they found out that Col Saadon had posted an "unfavourable comment" against the accused in an article in a news portal.Col Saadon had allegedly responded to a news report by saying that Major Zaidi should be a rubber tapper if he did not like being in the military."Fairness has been compromised. Our client doesn't want the presiding officer on the case to stay," Hanipa Maidin, the defence's leading counsel had said in a news report on November 5.The five-member panel then decided to hand the matter to the court martial's convening authority, as it was the only body that could decide if the panel should be dissolved.Col Saadon allegedly made the comment using a Facebook account under the name Saadon Tson. The comment was in response to an article "Peguam: Kesalahan Mejar Zaidi hanya kerana berani" (Lawyer: Major Zaidi charged for being courageous) published in Malaysiakini in its Bahasa Malaysia section on October 20, 2014.The user named Saadon Tson had said: "klu tak nak jd tentera duk kampung motong getah je" (If you don't want to be in the military, then stay in the village and tap rubber).Hanipa said the comment was noticed after Major Zaidi had lodged a complaint with the commander of the Air Force Division at its headquarters in Sungai Besi. The authorities recently decided to retain the panel for the case after hearing the defence submission on the matter. – January 12, 2015

Polis tangkap peguam Eric Paulsen

Polis tangkap peguam Eric Paulsen

Penang police on lookout for more suspects in Myanmar murders

A house in Kampung Pisang, Machang Bubok, where two of the suspects stayed, was allegedly used as a slaughterhouse. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 12, 2015.Police are looking for four foreigners believed to be part of the group behind a series of murder-cum-mutilations of Myanmar refugees in Penang.State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said although the four have since fled the state, police believe they are still in the country and had assumed new identities.“Our investigations indicated that they are still hiding here. We will use all our resources to find and arrest them," he said at the state police headquarters in George Town today.Rahim said police were having difficulty tracking them down as the suspects did not have any official records in the country.“They can easily change their names and they also have no families here," Rahim said.“But we will search on until we get them," he added, without providing further details.Police had in November launched Ops Kelar – an operation specifically to probe into the murders involving foreigners and Myanmar nationals whose bodies were chopped up and body parts dumped at various locations in the state.Rahim however was tight-lipped on the motives of the murders, saying that it stemmed from personal feuds that originated from Myanmar. He urged Malaysians not to panic, saying that the security and safety of locals are not under threat.Early last month, Penang police picked up 20 suspects in their 20s and 40s, including two men in Rawang, in connection with the cases.A house in Kampung Pisang, Machang Bubok, where two of the suspects stayed, was allegedly used as a slaughterhouse.Eight suspects were released on bail in early December and another one released this month.Of the remaining 11, nine are now being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder while two others under Section 6 of the Immigration Act for illegal entry, he said.Rahim added that police are closing in on a second cell of Myanmar murderers in Penang whose members have also gone into hiding, with the help of relevant government agencies. On another matter, Rahim said the state police and federal Narcotics Investigations Department busted a drugs manufacturing syndicate operating in the northern region with the arrests of six people in Penang and Sungai Petani in Kedah last Saturday. The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for trafficking in dangerous drugs which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction. He said the total drugs seized amounted to RM500,000 in value.“The syndicate was supplying in the northern states and did not seem to be linked to any other drug syndicates," he said.He said police acted on a tip-off and began an operation in Jelutong, George Town, at about 1.30pm in which two men were arrested and 16 packets of heroin weighing 6,474g were seized. The arrests led the police to raid a house in Sungai Petani where an illegal drugs processing laboratory was found, he said.Police seized chemical items, processing equipment, 259g of heroin and 23.8kg of caffeine, and arrested a man and a woman, aged 48 and 38 respectively, at the site, he said. This then led to a raid on another laboratory at a house in Faraday Road in Gelugor, Penang, in which two more men were arrested, he added.Police found a loaded semi-automatic gun and a box of bullets, with 18.7 kg of caffeine, chemical materials, equipment, 860 gm of heroine base and 460g of heroin here, Rahim said. All the suspects are being held in remand until January 17, he added. – January 12, 2015.

Cabinet’s ignorance over Zahid’s letter unbelievable, says DAP

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang questions the position of the Cabinet in denying any knowledge of the letter from Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to the FBI on gambling kingpin Paul Phua. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 12, 2015.The DAP has asked how it was possible that the Cabinet was unaware of the Home Minister's letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) backing a Malaysian gambling kingpin, and slammed ministers  for not raising the matter at last week's meeting.Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang said no Malaysian would believe that the ministers were ignorant of the letter on Paul Phua Wei Seng, saying it was the "Biggest Show in Malaysia in the new year.""While the whole literate population was agog with their punches and counter-punches, the jabs and feints, the DPM and the rest of the Cabinet were blissfully ignorant as if they were living in a different world from the 30 million Malaysians!?"Could this be possible?" asked Lim in a statement today.Earlier today, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Cabinet was unaware of the letter Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had sent to the FBI declaring that Phua was not a member of the Hong Kong 14K Triad."This being the case, Muhyiddin and the rest of the Cabinet ministers should explain why they had failed their public responsibilities and duties in failing to raise the Zahid-Phua-Shafee-Khalid quadrilateral tangle in last Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, especially if the ministers care for the interests and international reputation of the country!" said Lim. – January 12, 2015.MORE TO COME

Malaysians taking loans to join Isis, reports paper

Security forces personnel take part in clashes with Isis in the Middle East. Officials say some Malaysians have taken loans to pay for their passage to join Isis in Syria. – Reuters pic, January 11, 2015.Some Malaysians have gone to the extent of taking personal loans from banks and moneylenders in order to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) in the Middle East. The South China Morning Post quoted Malaysian counter-terrorism officials as saying the loans were taken to fund passage and living expenses in Syria and Iraq."At least two women have taken personal loans to pay for their passage to Syria to join Isis and also to fund their living expenses there," the official told SCMP."One woman took a RM20,000 personal loan from RHB Bank while the other borrowed RM6,000 from a licensed moneylender."SCMP reported that the emerging trend comes after an Isis cell leader in Malaysia urged followers to apply for the loans in order to help them join the fight in the Middle East.Despite numerous Isis supporters and sympathisers being arrested by police, Malaysians have not been discouraged from attempting to join up with Isis.To date, at least 59 Malaysians are officially known to have joined Isis.More than 65 have been arrested by police either on their way to Syria and Iraq or on their way back since the start of last year."There are no indications that these two women will return to Malaysia. The chances of that is very slim, hence the loan is not likely to be repaid," the official told SCMP.Apart from seeking martyrdom, some Malaysians went to Syria because they wanted to live in an Islamic caliphate, which was declared in an area straddling Syria and Iraq in June last year.Malaysia, according to Isis supporters, is an infidel state as it maintains a secular constitution."We arrested a family of five in Shah Alam who sold off their business, property and land and were about to move to Syria," said the official.Shah Alam is located 25 kilometres outside the capital city of Kuala Lumpur."This family owns one restaurant and three kindergartens," the official said.At least six Malaysians have died in Syria and Iraq fighting for Isis, said the official, who also confirmed that a former Malaysian Armed Forces commando was among 135 Isis-linked militants detained by Saudi Arabian authorities in Riyadh in December. – January 11, 2015.

Discharged, indelible ink whistle-blower ‎quips he’ll now tap rubber

Major Zaidi Ahmad says he has no regrets over issuing a media statement concerning the indelible ink used in the May 2013 general election. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Najjua Zulkefli, January 12, 2015.A picture of calm despite being dismissed from the armed forces for breaching protocol on making public statements, Major Zaidi Ahmad smiled and walked out of the military court today with no regrets for whistle-blowing on problems with the indelible ink used in the May 2013 general election."It is God's will. I accept it. There is nothing to be afraid of and I am not going to appeal," Zaidi, 45, told reporters today.Asked what he would do next, he quipped, "Balik kampung motong getah (I'll go back to the village and be a rubber tapper)," in reference to a comment allegedly posted on an online article about his case by the military court's presiding officer.Zaidi's counsel had tried to get the military panel hearing his case dissolved based on the presiding officer's alleged actions which were deemed biased and prejudicial.Zaidi was today dismissed from the Royal Malaysian Air Force after 26 years of service for breaching two standing orders by giving a media statement without the consent of the Defence Ministry, and for leaking confidential information without the consent of the Armed Forces Council. The contents of his media statement pertained to the indelible ink used in the general election which was found to wash off easily, thus allegedly compromising the integrity of the polls.During the trial, Major Zaidi's lawyer Mohd Hanipa Maidin had brought to the court's attention a comment posted on an article in Malaysiakini titled "Peguam: Kesalahan Mejar Zaidi hanya kerana berani" (Lawyer: Major Zaidi charged for being courageous) published in its Bahasa Malaysia section on October 20.A user with a Facebook account under the name Saadon Tson had commented, "klu tak nak jd tentera duk kampung motong getah je" (If you don't want to be in the military then stay in the village and tap rubber).Alleging that the Facebook account belonged to presiding officer Col Saadon Hasnon, Hanipa had told the court, "Fairness has been compromised. Our client doesn't want the presiding officer on the case to stay".Tapping rubber is considered a low-paying menial job although the commodity is one of Malaysia's main exports.Major Zaidi, however, failed to get the court martial panel dissolved. In delivering the sentence today, Col Saadon said the punishment to dismiss Major Zaidi from the service was made after considering his excellent record of service, as well as the loyalty and nationalism he had showed throughout his service with the air force."This is not because of the indelible ink case. This is because of the offence he committed in going against the two standing orders issued by the Air Force's higher authority," Col Saadon said today.Major Zaidi when met after the sentence said that he will continue to serve with the force until he receives his discharge letter."Until then I will still be going to work as usual," he said, adding that he believed he was still entitled to his pension and other benefits, as the discharge was a normal dismissal. The dismissal still needs to be confirmed and approved by the confirming officer before it is put into effect.Major Zaidi's elder sister Roszi Ahmad also expressed supported for her brother."All of his siblings have been very supportive of him. Like he said, this is only dunia (earthly). Let's prepare for the judgement after life," said Roszi, who had attended all of Major Zaidi's court proceedings. The air force major's wife, who was also present, said she had expected her husband's dismissal."It's Allah's rezeki," she said. – January 12, 2015.
